60°C is the sanitizing tier: dust mites die, most bacteria perish, and heavily soiled towels revive. The cost is fabric life — hot water shrinks cotton (pre-shrunk fabric excepted), fades dyes, and destroys elastane in one wash. Save three-dot washes for the items that need them; everything else lives longer at one dot.
