The shrunken wool sweater did not shrink — it felted: the fibers bonded to each other permanently, pulling the fabric into a dense, smaller mat. Understanding felting explains every "hand wash only" tag and why the fix attempts always fail.
The scales
Wool fibers are covered in microscopic scales, like shingles pointing one direction. In a hot, wet, agitated environment, the scales open, fibers slide past each other — and only one direction: the scales catch and lock. Agitation drives fibers against each other thousands of times; heat and moisture soften the scales' grip-then-lock. The result is a fabric bonded from within — irreversible, because the locking is mechanical, not a fold you can undo.
The three ingredients

Remove agitation and felting mostly stops: hand-washing (gentle squeezes) and the machine's wool cycle (which rocks rather than agitates) keep the scales from locking. pH matters too — wool-specific detergents are pH-neutral; regular detergent's alkalinity roughens the scales.
The rescue attempts, honestly
- Mild felting (slightly snug): soak in lukewarm water + hair conditioner (relaxes scales), gently stretch back to shape, dry flat. Works sometimes, partially.
- Full felting: the fibers have bonded — nothing un-bonds them. The sweater becomes a bag, a pillow cover, or a pet-bed liner.
- Prevention is the only cure: cold, gentle, wool detergent, dry flat — the hand-wash symbol decoded into four habits.
The care label was never being fussy. It was describing the scales.
